A rear observation platform on a Chicago and Alton Railroad train is the subject here, and the catalog notes suggest it may be an observation car, a feature railroads promoted to passengers who wanted to watch the landscape recede behind them. The Chicago and Alton ran between Chicago and St. Louis. This is a glass copy negative made from a print first copyrighted in 1900 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold travel views of American places to a wide public.
