The Chicago and Alton Railroad shops at Bloomington, Illinois, show freight cars standing among the buildings and tracks of a working maintenance yard. The Chicago and Alton ran its main line between Chicago and St. Louis through Bloomington, so the shops were a key point for repairing and servicing rolling stock. The view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, industries and scenery across the United States in the early 1900s.
