A day coach of the Chicago and Alton Railroad, its door lettered with the Pullman name, is the subject of this large glass negative. The Chicago and Alton ran passenger service between Chicago and St. Louis, and Pullman built many of the cars that carried its travelers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made photographic views of railroads, resorts and cities around the turn of the twentieth century, produced the image. This plate is a copy of an earlier photograph, so it records a published view of the car as much as the car itself.
