A locomotive numbered 501, pulling its tender, is the subject of this 1900 view, one of the railroad portraits made for the Chicago & Alton, a line that served the Midwest out of Chicago. The image is a glass transparency rather than a paper print, so it was meant to be viewed by light passing through it, a format that suited the bright, detailed record of steam power in the period. It comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American places and industry around the turn of the century. Its catalog number appears on the negative, and the glass was later donated to the Library of Congress through the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
