Scenes in and about Chicago" documents a city where the 1894 Pullman strike had grown from a dispute at a railcar works into a national halt to rail traffic. Harper's Weekly ran these halftone views in its July 21, 1894 issue, when the American Railway Union's boycott of Pullman cars had stalled trains across the Midwest. The military camps reflect the federal troops President Cleveland sent to Chicago that month over the objection of Illinois Governor John Altgeld, to protect the mails and interstate commerce. The sabotage in the title points to the derailments and disabled switches that marked the strike's most violent days.
