Tulalip, on Puget Sound in Snohomish County, Washington, marked its 59th Treaty Day on January 22, 1914, commemorating the Point Elliott Treaty that Coast Salish tribes, including the Snohomish, signed in 1855 with Governor Isaac Stevens. By then the reservation was home to families who fished, farmed, and found seasonal work in nearby logging camps and sawmills, while the lumber centers of Everett and Marysville drew heavily on timber cut from the surrounding forests. The annual observance brought people together for speeches, feasting, and gatherings that recalled the land ceded and the promises made under the treaty. For residents and neighboring towns alike, Treaty Day was a yearly reminder of how the reservation had come into being and of the unsettled questions about land and rights that followed it into the early twentieth century.
