Tulalip, on Possession Sound in Snohomish County, Washington, held its 60th Treaty Day in 1914, marking the Point Elliott Treaty of January 22, 1855, under which tribes of the Puget Sound region ceded large territories to the United States. By then the reservation's Coast Salish residents, including Snohomish, Snoqualmie, and Skagit families, worked in logging, shingle mills, fishing, and farming, while nearby Everett and the mill towns along the Snohomish River grew on timber and rail traffic. Treaty Day drew families, speeches, and games, and it was also a time when reservation leaders pressed grievances over land allotment and the fishing rights the treaty had reserved. The Catholic mission school at Tulalip shaped schooling for many young people of that generation.
