Scenic, Washington, sat along the Great Northern Railway's mountain line in the Cascades in 1914, a stretch of track the railroad had pushed over the range in the 1890s. The line carried lumber, ore, and supplies in and out of the upper Skykomish valley, and it also carried the growing number of travelers who came to see the peaks and forests. Great Northern promoted this scenery to passengers from Seattle, Spokane, and the East, turning a steep, costly grade into a selling point. The steam trains were slow and hard on the crews who worked the switchbacks and snowsheds, and the company was already planning the long tunnel that would later replace the mountain crossing.
