Hoquiam, Washington, sat on the Chehalis River near the mouth of Grays Harbor in 1914, and its fortunes rested on timber. Sawmills, shingle mills, and the ships that carried their output defined the town's working life, and the harbor's lumber trade reached buyers up and down the Pacific coast and overseas. That year the Panama Canal opened, a development that promised cheaper routes for Pacific Northwest lumber bound for eastern American markets. Residents of the town would have known Hoquiam as a mill town, where whistles and the rhythm of log trains set the daily schedule and where civic life revolved around the payrolls of the companies along the waterfront.
