Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1925 was a quiet river town of a few thousand people at most, far smaller than the city it had been a century earlier. Its residents knew it mainly for the Latter-day Saints who built it in the 1840s under Joseph Smith, who were driven out in 1846 after years of armed conflict with neighbors. The temple they raised on the bluff above the Mississippi was burned in 1848 and its remaining walls were later destroyed by a storm, so by the 1920s the town's identity rested on memory and on the older brick and frame houses that still lined its streets. Farming and small trade in Hancock County provided most local work, and the town had little of the railroad or factory growth that drew people to larger Illinois cities. Three houses like these show the modest, settled character of a place whose famous past was already well behind it.
