In April 1926, a delegation of striking textile mill workers from Passaic, New Jersey, came to the White House, placing a labor dispute from the industrial Northeast in front of the nation's capital. The Passaic strike had begun earlier that year at the woolen and worsted mills and drew in thousands of mostly immigrant workers protesting wage cuts. The photograph was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives record much of the city's public life in the 1910s and 1920s. The glass plate has the streaks and blemishes that come with age in its original coating, which is part of what makes it a document of its time.
