A French diplomat, rather than a White House official, is the focus of this picture. According to the title on the negative sleeve, it shows Ambassador Jusserand at the White House on October 9, 1924. Jean Jules Jusserand, a French scholar and diplomat, served as his country's ambassador in Washington from 1903 until 1925. The glass plate came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital's streets, buildings and visitors in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of the original coatings are visible on the plate, and they are worth noticing as part of the image's physical history.
