President Calvin Coolidge poses with a motorcycle and sidecar in front of the White House on June 6, 1924, an informal scene that contrasts with the reserved image he cultivated as president. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the capital's officials, buildings and events in the early twentieth century. Coolidge had taken office in 1923 after Warren G. Harding's death, and his restrained public manner makes this lighthearted moment stand out. Because the picture survives as a glass negative, its surface may show streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coating.
