Taken on the south lawn of the White House on February 26, 1925, this full-length portrait shows Calvin Coolidge standing and facing the camera. He had become president in August 1923 after Warren G. Harding's death and was elected in his own right in 1924, so the photograph was made just days before his second inauguration on March 4, 1925. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose work documents many officials of the period. Coolidge's famously reserved public manner, which earned him the nickname "Silent Cal," is evident in the composed, unsmiling pose.
