Among the many portraits of Jacqueline Kennedy, this one stands out as the first official White House photograph of her as First Lady, taken in 1961 during the first year of the Kennedy administration. Shown in a half-length pose, seated on a couch and facing the camera directly, she projects the poised, composed image that became closely associated with the White House in those years. The print later came to the Library of Congress through the United States Information Agency, which distributed official imagery of the administration abroad and at home. Its catalog notes reflect the way the portrait moved from the presidency's own files into the public record.
