Colonel William H. Crook spent many years as a staff member at the White House, and this cyanotype shows him in a half-length view, seated at a desk and turned to the left. The blue-toned process, a early photographic printing method also called blueprinting, gives the portrait a distinctive cast. The picture belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, which the photographer assembled while documenting people and rooms connected with the executive mansion around 1890 to 1910.
