Little is recorded about the man at this desk beyond the name Mr. Fred Carpenter, but the setting is what makes the picture worth a look. It shows one of the White House offices around 1909, a few years after the 1902 expansion moved the executive staff into a new wing separate from the family living quarters. The photograph carries a Clinedinst copyright line, a reference to the Washington studio whose portraits and views of government figures and buildings circulated widely in that period. The date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified.
