Packed onto the back lawn of the White House, this crowd has gathered for the Easter egg roll, a tradition that dates to 1878, when Rutherford B. Hayes opened the grounds to children after the event was barred from the Capitol lawn. By 1921, the year of this photograph, the gathering was a well-established spring occasion that drew families from across Washington. The picture shows how the executive grounds once served as a public space, with far looser access than the restrictions in place today.
