A Black boy and a young white girl walk hand in hand in this 1898 view of the Easter egg roll on the White House grounds, a pairing that sets it apart from the usual crowd scenes of the event. By then the egg roll had been a fixture on the presidential calendar for about two decades, drawing children from across Washington to roll colored eggs and play on the lawn. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented life in the capital and at the White House, made the print. The caption comes from an old, unverified card, so the exact moment and the children's identities remain uncertain.
