Children and grown-ups spread across the White House grounds in this 1889 view of the Easter egg roll. After Congress barred egg rolling on the Capitol grounds because of damage to the turf, President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the White House lawn to families in 1878. By 1889 the event had become a yearly spring fixture in Washington, with families rolling dyed eggs down the slope. The picture is a useful record of how public the executive grounds had become.
