The Easter Monday egg roll on the White House grounds is the event this picture records, a tradition that by 1889 had already drawn crowds of children and families to the lawn. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the first American women to work as a professional photographer and a frequent chronicler of Washington life, made the gelatin silver print during this period. The scene shows the executive mansion as a backdrop to the holiday gathering, a useful glimpse of how public the presidential grounds had become in the late 1800s.
