A street vendor and his cart stand near the White House during the Easter egg rolling in 1898, a detail that places the commercial life of the crowds alongside the holiday itself. The children's egg roll on the White House grounds had become a Washington custom by the late 1870s, drawing families who spilled out onto the surrounding streets. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who recorded everyday life in the capital, made the picture, and it offers a glimpse of the sidewalk trade that grew up around the event.
