The State Dining Room shown here is the room where presidents hosted formal dinners for visiting dignitaries and officials, and this view records its furnishings before the major remodeling of 1902. The record places the picture under the McKinley administration, though with a question mark, so the exact year is uncertain. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the executive mansion's interiors in the 1890s, made the image. Its value lies in showing the Victorian-era decor that the Theodore Roosevelt renovation later replaced.
