Few rooms in the executive mansion changed as much as the state dining room, which was reworked during the 1902 renovation that Theodore Roosevelt commissioned from the firm McKim, Mead & White. This 1906 view by Frances Benjamin Johnston shows the room's north and east sides shortly after that work, with its formal furnishings and décor on display. Johnston, a Washington photographer, documented the house's interiors in the early 1900s, so her pictures capture rooms that had recently been reorganized. The furniture arrangement and wall treatment offer a sense of how the presidency presented itself at the dinner table.
