The State Dining Room photographed here dates to about 1904, a few years after the White House was extensively remodeled during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. That work, carried out under the direction of the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, reorganized the executive mansion's public rooms and gave the state rooms a more formal, classical character. The picture was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American landmarks to tourists and collectors in the early twentieth century, so it reflects how the public was invited to see the building's interiors at that time.
