The State Dining Room shown on this c1903 stereo card captures the White House just after its major remodeling under President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902. The New York firm McKim, Mead & White led that work, which removed much of the cluttered Victorian decor and restored a more formal Neoclassical character to the mansion's public rooms. The card was issued by William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who produced many stereographs, so the view was made to be seen through a viewer by home audiences who could not visit the presidential residence in person.
