The State Dining Room sits on the ground floor of the White House's public wing, and this 1910s view captures it at a time when it was still a formal room for official dinners and receptions rather than the more ceremonial space it later became in renovations. The Library of Congress holds the image as a photographic print from the decade, one of a body of pictures documenting the executive residence before the major structural overhaul of the 1950s. Those photographs are useful to historians because they show how the residence was furnished and arranged in the Progressive Era, when presidents from Taft to Wilson hosted state functions there. Look at the room's lighting, furniture and table setting to get a sense of the formal entertaining of the period.
