The State Dining Room, where presidents hosted formal banquets, is the subject of this view by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented the White House interiors around the turn of the twentieth century. The pictures from this period show the building before Theodore Roosevelt's 1902 renovation reshaped many of its public rooms, so the scene reflects an older style of decor. Because the print was made decades after the original exposure, it is best read as a later reproduction of an earlier negative.
