Few photographs show the State Dining Room of the White House as it looked before the major interior overhaul of the early twentieth century, and this print by Frances Benjamin Johnston is one of them. Johnston, one of the first American women to work as a professional photographer, made a long series of pictures of the executive mansion's rooms in the 1890s and early 1900s, recording furnishings, decoration, and the formal settings used for state occasions. Her interiors are valued today because they capture the Victorian-era character of rooms that were soon remade, and the Library of Congress preserves them in its Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection.
