Few rooms in the White House were as visibly reworked as the State Dining Room, which appears here in a stereograph from about 1903. The card, copyrighted by B.L. Singley for the Keystone View Company, was made for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave armchair visitors a three-dimensional look at the room. The photograph dates to just after the 1902 renovation of the executive mansion, carried out under President Theodore Roosevelt, when the public rooms were redecorated and furnished in a more formal style. Stereo cards like this one were a popular way for Americans to see distant landmarks at home.
