Two young children sit in a goat cart on the grounds of the White House, a scene that shows the domestic side of the Benjamin Harrison presidency. The children belong to Major Russell Harrison, the president's son, whose family lived in the executive mansion during the administration of 1889 to 1893. The goat cart was a favorite amusement for the president's grandchildren, and the animal that pulled it drew attention from visitors and reporters of the day. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering woman photographer working in Washington, made the picture, and her portraits from this period offer a relaxed look at life inside the mansion.
