A lowered flag above the White House signals national mourning, and this view of the building's front facade records one such occasion, honoring those lost on the USS Thresher. The nuclear submarine sank during deep-diving trials off the New England coast in April 1963, taking 129 men with her, and the loss shook the Navy and the country. Old Civil War cannons in the foreground add a note of the nineteenth-century military history that the White House grounds have long held.
