Taken on August 3, 1923, this view shows the flag above the White House lowered to half-mast, a traditional sign of national mourning. President Warren G. Harding had died in San Francisco the previous day while on a western tour, and flags across the capital were lowered in his honor. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio whose glass negatives document the city in the early twentieth century. Faint streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coatings are visible on the glass and are worth noticing as signs of the medium's fragility.
