The south front of the White House appears here with the large glass conservatory wing at left and the American flag flying above the roofline. The White House greenhouses supplied plants and flowers for the family and for official entertaining, so the conservatory was a working part of the household. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this photochrom, a process that built up color through several lithographic stones, which gives the pale stone and the greenhouse glass a soft, painted quality. The view captures the residence as it looked before the early twentieth-century remodeling reshaped its grounds.
