Few places in Washington were more closely tied to daily life at the executive mansion than its greenhouse, and this stereograph card shows the conservatory itself, with its plants and flowers arranged for the camera. The title, "Shall I or Shall I Not?," is a playful phrase that a photographer or publisher might have chosen to suggest a question for the viewer. Stereograph cards like this one were sold in the late 1800s and early 1900s and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth. The card was registered for copyright by C.L. Wasson in 1900, one of the many small publishers who supplied American households with views of well-known sites.
