Issued as a stereo card by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1898, this view was meant to be seen through a hand viewer, where two slightly offset exposures fused into one image with depth. Keystone was among the largest American publishers of stereographs, and its cards filled parlors where families toured distant places from home. The White House shown here predates the West Wing added in 1902, so it reflects the executive mansion as most Americans knew it during the McKinley years. The copyright notice in the name of B.L. Singley is worth noting for anyone tracing how such views were made.
