The Blue Room, the oval reception room on the State Floor of the White House, is the setting here, and its formal arrangement shows how the space was furnished in the late 1800s. The photograph was taken around 1890 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who was among the first to document the interiors of the executive mansion. Her images are valued today because they record rooms that were later altered during the 1902 renovation, when the White House was substantially rebuilt and redecorated. Look closely at the chandelier and the furnishings, which give a sense of the period's taste for ornate, carefully arranged display.
