The Blue Room, the oval reception room on the State floor of the White House, is the subject of this stereograph, made around 1902 by Underwood & Underwood. Its curved wall faces the South Portico, and its classical furnishings reflect the early nineteenth-century style associated with James Monroe. The 1902 renovation under Theodore Roosevelt restored much of the mansion, and the Blue Room was returned to a Monroe-era character. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the room a sense of depth.
