Few rooms in the executive mansion carried as much weight as the president's office, and this stereograph lets viewers look into it in three dimensions. The Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1898, when the presidency was still run from inside the White House itself, since the West Wing was not built until 1902. Pairs of slightly offset photographs like this one were viewed through a stereoscope, a popular parlor device that made interiors and famous places appear solid and close at hand.
