Few drawings show the President's House as Benjamin Henry Latrobe proposed reworking its interior, and this 1807 sheet is one of them. The watercolor and ink plan of the principal story carries handwritten labels such as "Public Drawing Room," "antichamber," and "Common Drawing room," marking rooms that were being reconsidered for formal receptions and everyday use. Latrobe, who oversaw public buildings in Washington, worked on the house during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, when the building was still unfinished and its room arrangement remained open to change. The plan is worth studying for what it reveals about the debate over how a presidential residence should function.
