Handwritten labels on this drawing name the rooms of the principal story as they were to be reworked: a "Public Drawing Room," a "Common Drawing room," and an "antichamber or Pref. Parlor." These notes show the building's ceremonial and social spaces were still being sorted out in 1807, during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect Jefferson relied on for public buildings in Washington, prepared the revisions. The plan records a stage in a long effort to give the executive mansion a functional layout for official receptions and family life, years before the building was burned during the War of 1812.
