This 1807 watercolor and ink site plan and principal-story plan by Benjamin Henry Latrobe carries handwritten notes proposing changes to the main floor of the President's House. Labels such as "Public Drawing Room," "Common Drawing room," and "antichamber or Pref. Parlor" show Latrobe rethinking how the rooms would serve guests, the household, and official business. At the time he was surveyor of the public buildings in Washington, and his revisions were part of a long effort to complete a house that had been under construction since the early 1790s. The paper lining and watermark suggest the sheet was a working document rather than a presentation piece.
