This 1853 drawing of the principal floor, the state level where official receptions and dinners took place, shows how the Executive Mansion's main rooms were laid out in the year Franklin Pierce took office. The house had been burned by British forces in 1814 and rebuilt in the years after, so by mid-century it was an established residence and working office for the president. The drawing belongs to the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering holdings, and researchers often use such plans to trace how the rooms were arranged and changed over time.
