This is a floor plan of the second story of the White House, the level that held the family's private rooms and the main state rooms, rather than a view of the building's exterior. Dated 1853, it belongs to the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings, and it shows the layout as a working document, with room divisions and dimensions that matter more than appearance. The mansion had been burned by British forces in 1814 and rebuilt, and plans like this one help show how its interior was arranged and used at mid-century.
