This plan shows the principal floor of the Executive Mansion, the level where presidents held receptions, dinners, and other formal occasions. Drawn in 1853, the year Franklin Pierce took office, it records the arrangement of the state rooms, including the East Room, the Blue Room, and the Red and Green Rooms, along with the passages and stairs that linked them. The house had been burned during the War of 1812 and rebuilt, and by the 1850s it was both a family residence and a stage for public ceremony. Because the drawing is so precise, it is useful to anyone trying to understand how the building was used before later renovations changed its interior.
