The basement plan shows the lowest level of the President's House as it was laid out in 1853, the year Franklin Pierce took office. Rooms on this level held the working side of the household: kitchens, storerooms, and service spaces that supported life and official entertaining upstairs. The mansion had been gutted by British troops in 1814 and rebuilt afterward, so drawings like this one help researchers trace how its interior was arranged in the decades that followed.
