This 1853 drawing shows the White House from below ground, with the basement floor plan and an area way, the sunken light well that brought daylight and air to rooms set below grade. The mansion had been rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, and mid-century plans like this one record how its service floors and lower rooms were arranged. It is a useful view of the building's working spaces, which rarely appear in the more familiar exterior views.
