The tennis court on the White House grounds, with the Office Building standing close by, is where the so-called "tennis cabinet" gathered. Theodore Roosevelt, an avid player, used the court to meet with a circle of close advisers and friends, and the nickname stuck to the informal group that joined him for games and conversation. The photograph, dated around 1909 near the end of his presidency, shows how closely the recreational space sat against the working offices of the federal government. It is a useful view for anyone interested in how Roosevelt blended exercise with politics.
