Few pictures of Theodore Roosevelt show him so surrounded by his inner circle. Here he sits on the White House lawn with a group of some 30 men that the press called the "Tennis Cabinet," a loose circle of friends, officials and sportsmen who joined him for matches on the court at the executive mansion. Roosevelt was an avid player and relied on these men as informal advisers beyond his formal cabinet. The record dates the photograph to about 1909, the year his presidency ended, so it captures the group at the close of his administration.
