A small child in a light-colored outfit is the focus of this 1898 view, which the caption identifies as one of the youngest participants in the White House Easter egg roll. The annual event on the South Lawn drew children from across Washington, and it had moved there in the late 1870s after Congress ended egg rolling on the Capitol grounds. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who photographed the presidential household and its public life during these years, captured the scene with a sharp eye for the informal moments around official traditions.
